Mastery and Brilliance at the Manizales Bullfighting Festival

This Thursday night, the Bullfighting Festival in honor of the Virgin of Macarena took place with great success, benefiting the Dr. Rafael Henao Toro Children’s Hospital. Following the procession of the Virgin, the celebration began with eight bulls from the Ernesto Gutiérrez Ranch, uneven in presentation and performance. The first bull stood out, earning applause during its drag, while the second was pardoned by Sebastián Castella. Antonio Ferrera cut two ears after captivating the audience with a complete performance, excelling in the three phases: picadors, banderillas, and muleta. He concluded with a near-instant sword thrust, earning the bull applause during its drag. Sebastián Castella showcased his mastery, making bullfighting appear effortless. With elegance, he welcomed the bull with the cape, connecting with the audience from the first pass. The bull displayed great transmission and nobility, which Castella handled with poise, delivering increasingly powerful series. The call for a pardon was overwhelming, and it was granted, awarding him two symbolic ears. The third bull, fought by Cristóbal Pardo, had limited strength but provided sufficient play. The Colombian matador handled the banderilla phase, delivering a solid performance. With a well-placed sword thrust, he cut one ear. Alejandro Talavante faced the fourth bull, which quickly lost its strength. Nevertheless, he demonstrated skill with hand changes on the muleta, showcasing quality on the right horn. After one attempt, a sword thrust earned him one ear. Daniel Luque faced the most challenging bull of the evening, which lacked potential. Despite the difficulties, he exhibited determination, cutting one ear. It was not Emilio de Justo’s season. He greeted the sixth bull with tight, heartfelt veronicas. With the muleta, he crafted slow series of right-handed passes, including a stunning long trench pass. However, the bull stuck to the boards, and a slightly misplaced sword thrust prevented a trophy, earning him applause from the crowd. Román faced a bull with no options, receiving two warnings, and the bull was jeered during its drag. The young matador Felipe Negret surprised everyone with a polished technique and significant improvements in his style. He dominated the evening’s most noble bull. Although seeking a pardon, a precise sword thrust secured the gateway to glory with two ears. All proceeds from the festival will be donated entirely to the Children’s Hospital, supporting its invaluable work for the children of the Caldas Department. Galería

Diego Louceiro before his Tepeapulco performance

The dynasty rejoneador Diego Louceiro is very motivated with his participation in the bullfight scheduled for this Saturday, January 11 at the Monumental “San Marcos” in Tepeapulco, Hidalgo, where he will be accompanied by Ernesto Javier “Calita” and Juan Pablo Sanchez, two bullfighters with the most bullfights in 2024, Hidalgo, where he will be accompanied by Ernesto Javier “Calita” and Juan Pablo Sanchez, the two bullfighters who fought the most bullfights in 2024, to face a bull from Las Huerta for rejones and four bulls from San Isidro for the bullfight on foot.   Diego’s history as a rejoneador is interesting, as he was also one of the most outstanding forcados, and is currently in charge of the Centro Ecuestre Casa Louceiro, which he founded five years ago in Valle de Amazcala, near Querétaro, and where 45 students are enrolled, on a ranch where 80 horses live.       “The horse and the bull have been united throughout time and they are two wonderful beings, so for me, who is dedicated to horses, to be able to fight a bullfight or a festival is always something motivating. And although I don’t fight often, I always try to be prepared for any opportunity that comes my way, like the one on Saturday in Tepeapulco. When I have horses that are more or less ready to fight, I like to accept this kind of invitations because I enjoy them very much”, says the grandson of Don Pedro Louceiro, who was an institution in the world of rejoneo.   Diego was born in Mexico City on August 13, 1983 and debuted as a child bullfighter, before going to live in Portugal, where he continued learning the difficult craft of riding and fighting some bullfights. However, due to various circumstances, he became a forcado and began fighting bulls with the Évora group. Upon his return to Mexico, he joined the Mexican Forcados group founded by his father, Pedro Louceiro Firmiño, and after 10 years with the forcados, he returned to the horses, which he loves so much.   The Tepeapulco bullfight will begin at 4:30 p.m., and ticket sales are available at the Boletea electronic platform, as well as at the “Forrajes Agis” store, in its Tepeapulco and Ciudad Sahagún branches. For further information, please call 771 152 8844.

Arcila’s will and dedication in Manizales

Under a heavy rain and a static crowd, the fourth bullfight of the Feria de Manizales, Colombia took place where the local bullfighter conquered the ring with tenacity and hunger for triumph.   It is worth mentioning the few opportunities that Colombian bullfighters have inside and outside the country, where bullfighting events are increasingly reduced and prevents the constancy of their careers. Reason that was not an impediment this Wednesday afternoon for Arcila to show place and technique.   Bulls from the Las Ventas del Espíritu Santo ranch were fought, well presented and with age but lacking in strength, and in their majority, showing gentleness from the moment they were greeted. The most outstanding bull was the one that closed the Plaza, a cinqueño that allowed the game and under the incessant rain in the arena, managed to show its qualities, nobility and transmission.   José Arcila built a faena with a rough and tame bull with which he took water from the stones, managed to put it to the muleta and under an accurate thrust to get the first ear of the afternoon.   To close the bull, he structured the bullfight based on tempered tandas with depth in the middle. An accurate lunge that ensured him the cut of one more appendix and the exit to the shoulders.   It was not the same for Miguel Angel Perera, who tried to show off with his lot, but the gentleness overcame the bullfighting and although he was willing with the fourth, the failures with the estoque and the multiple attempts of descabello, dissipated any chance of triumph.   On the other hand, Daniel Luque tried with bullfighting skills to string together a faena that fell apart with the tame second. With the fifth bull of the afternoon, he opened his mouth and ended his presentation with a sharp estocada (thrust).
